His family moved to Liverpool from Birkenhead in 1940 and, after leaving school in 1942, he served his time with Harland & Wolff. He impressed Southport playing centre-half in a trial match in August 1945 and was signed on Liverpool County Combination forms for the Reserves. A former Waterloo Grammar School pupil, he was captain of the all-conquering West Lancashire ATC team in 1944–45, which included future Everton Chairman Phil Carter. He made his Southport début in the last game of 1945–46, 36 hours after turning professional. Although retained at the end of 1946–47, he gave up League football to complete his training as a Marine Engineer. Later, he joined the Merchant Navy and was with the S.S. Stranrealm and studying for his Chief Engineer’s ticket when, on shore leave in Sumatra, he and a colleague were waylaid by a gang of natives who attacked them with knives. His body was found the next morning in an alleyway.
